Privacy Policy
BasicCal collects almost nothing. This policy explains what we do and do not do with your data.
Last updated: 22 August 2026
What we do not collect
- We do not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising SDKs, or any third-party trackers.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone for marketing or advertising.
- We do not upload or sync your food log. It stays in a SQLite database on your phone and is not readable by us.
- We do not ask for your name, address, or date of birth. The only optional profile fields are a display name, email address, and birth year.
- We do not process payments ourselves. All purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your card details.
What we do collect
BasicCal talks to exactly two external services in the shipping version of the app:
Open Food Facts
When you scan a barcode, the app sends the barcode number to world.openfoodfacts.org to look up product information. Open Food Facts is an independent open database. Product data is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). You can read Open Food Facts' own privacy policy on their website.
Supabase
If you choose to create an account, your profile row (display name, email, birth year) and subscription status are stored in Supabase, hosted in Sydney, Australia (ap-southeast-2). Supabase does not store any food you have logged. You can delete your account at any time; see the account deletion page for details.
Health information
Nutrition data and body measurements you enter into BasicCal may constitute health information under Australian law and in other jurisdictions. We treat this as a sensitive category. It is stored only on your device, not uploaded to our servers, and is not used for any purpose beyond the app's core functionality.
Camera
The camera is used only to read barcodes, in real time, on your device. No image is stored, uploaded, or transmitted.
Children
BasicCal is not directed at children under 16. The target calculator in the app refuses ages below 16. If you are under 16, do not use BasicCal.
Data retention and deletion
Your food log is stored locally on your device and remains there until you delete the app or clear its data. We do not retain a copy.
If you create an account, your profile and subscription status are stored in Supabase. When you delete your account, this data is removed from our active systems within 30 days. Backups may retain a copy for up to 90 days for operational recovery, after which it is permanently deleted. See the account deletion page for how to delete your account.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you.
- Australia: Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to access and correct personal information we hold. Contact us using the details below.
- European Union and United Kingdom: Under the GDPR, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, and data portability. You also have the right to object to processing and to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority.
- California: Under the CCPA, California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete it, and the right to opt out of its sale. We do not sell personal information.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@basiccal.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The current version will always be posted on this page with the date it was last updated. Significant changes will be noted in the app.
